When Oops! is Part of God’s Plan
The sound of a low steam whistle came from the street. I jumped up from my chair, knowing what that sound meant–snack time! I ran out and hailed the man on his blue motorbike, the back outfitted with a gas burner used to make steam. The steam comes up through a board with holes drilled in it. Over each hole is placed a short piece of hollow bamboo. Inside the bamboo is grated coconut mixed with rice-flour and palm sugar. The steam cooks this into a lovely late afternoon snack. “I’ll order five,” I said. As he prepared the snacks, my national partner and I struck up a conversation with him. Being a foreigner, people love to talk to me about their local language, and our conversation quickly went that direction. So I asked him, “Do you know where language comes from?” And from there we launched into the story of the tower of Babel, which he had never heard. How foolish for people to think they can reach heaven through their own efforts! Right? “How do you plan to get to heaven?” we asked. As my partner and I shared with him, I could see that the man was making a great many more than five of the snacks. He kept pulling out the little bamboo tubes and stuffing them with grated coconut. Had he forgotten that I only wanted five? Soon it became clear that I had ordered not five of the individual snacks, but five portions, with six pieces in each portion! Chalk that one up to difficulties in cross cultural communication! But God had a plan. In the time it took for him to prepare all those snacks, my national partner and I had time to share a complete gospel presentation with him. How amazing that God uses even our mistakes to fill His divine appointments. And I didn’t mind getting extra snack as well!
