Little “Godly” Lies
Whether they are identified as “white” lies or “little” lies, the truth is that we are all guilty at some point of succumbing to the engagement of them. That’s where one discussion went at a particular Bible study in the book of Hebrews. This particular study was made up of many unbelievers, and so few would admit that these were still lies. They even called them as they are known in Argentina, “mentiritas piadosas,” which literally means “little godly lies.”
If there ever was a contradiction in terms, this would be it. The discussion began that God cannot lie, and so if lying cannot be associated with God’s character we must ask, why is it appropriate to associate God’s character with lying? It doesn’t matter the term to be used, lies are still lies and evidence of our sinful nature (cf. Proverbs 12:22).
Yet, this is part of the task in missions: confronting cultural idioms and mentalities with the character of God. Such a task requires much patience and commitment that is motivated by a deep love for God and others (Matthew 22:36-40). However, such a task also comes with great joy and celebration when one finally commits their life to Christ.
