The Sovereign God
There is no self-sufficient Christian. Identification as a Christian is identification with Christ, indicating a recognition of one’s own need for the help. Such a worldview creates friction with our American culture which seeks to enable self-sufficiency. That same friction exists in cross-cultural ministry where community is key. That’s why when a child of one missionary family was hospitalized, the natural reaction was anger as they stumbled through the procedures of the medical system. Yet, it was a new community contact that came to their aide. In God’s sovereignty, He had provided help when it was necessary. Not only was His provision helpful to the immediate situation, His greater purposes were served. He constructed a relationship that continues today in discipleship and fellowship. Such an act proves: God’s purposes are greater than ours, using each circumstance for His people’s good and His glory.
