FOR MISSIONS AND CHURCH LEADERS
PARADIGMS
IN CONFLICT: 10 Key Questions in Christian Missions Today,
Hesselgrave, David J., Grand Rapids, MI, Kregel, 2005. Dr.
Hesselgrave selects a balanced array of pressing issues that missionaries
and students of missions face today in Christian global outreach.
Using Scripture, social sciences, and history, he provides solid
answers and concludes that the future of Christian missions depends
more on the changes we do not make than on the changes we
do make.
MISSIONS
IN A NEW MILLENNIUM - Changes and Challenges in World Missions,
Glenny, W. Edward and Smallman, William H., eds.. Grand Rapids:
Kregel Publications, 2000. Here is a collection of essays from independent
Baptist missions leaders dealing with the changes and challenges
in world missions. It is broken into three sections dealing with
biblical studies, theological studies, and strategy studies.
MISSIONS
IN THE THIRD MILLENNIUM, Stan Guthrie, Waynesboro, GA: Paternoster
Publishing, 2000. This volume, written by a keen observer of the
global missions movement, offers insights to help students, churches,
missionaries, agencies, and Christians from outside the West grasp
the big picture and take practical steps for more effective involvement.
Notes, suggestions for further reading and discussion questions
are included.
OPERATION
WORLD, Johnstone, Patrick and Jason Mandryk, Waynesboro, GA: Paternoster
Publishing, 2000. Based on the supposition that "When we pray
God works," the authors put together a prayer guide covering
the entire populated world. Operation World offers demographic and
geographical information for every country in the world, as well
as answers to prayer (for applicable countries), and prayer requests.

have gathered a multi-faceted collection of readings exploring the
biblical, historical, cultural, and strategic dimensions of world

LET
THE NATIONS BE GLAD, Piper, John., Grand Rapids: Baker Book House,
1993. Piper draws on key biblical texts to show that worship is
the ultimate goal of the church, and that proper worship fuels missions.

and annihilation, then reviews the incentives of sovereign grace
for world evangelism, and the urgency of reaching unreached peoples.

of world religions. Fascinating information!

of different models in missions that will stimulate creative thinking
for the local church's international ministry.

FOR PROSPECTIVE MISSIONARIES
PAUL'S
IDEA OF COMMUNITY, Banks, Robert, Peabody, MA: Hendrickson Publications,
1994. How
much were Paul's thoughts a reflection of the broader culture he
lived in? Banks explores these types of question and sifts through
practices of the synagogue and mystery cults to give you a view
of the nature, structure, and basis of Paul's communities as he
saw them.
PLANTING
CHURCHES CROSS-CULTURALLY, Hesselgrave, David J. Grand Rapids, Baker-Revell
Publishers, 2000. Ministry training often emphasizes expanding on
the work of existing ministries to the neglect of addressing the
difficulties of planting new churches in North America and around
the world. This volume provides a practical, thorough, biblical,
and inspirational corrective.
PLANTING
NEW CHURCHES IN THE POSTMODERN AGE, Stetzer, Ed, Broadman-Holman,
2003. Despite the "bigger-is-better" mentality, statistics
do not support the assumption that size is necessarily the best
way to reach people. On a per capita basis, new churches win more
people to Christ than established churches. "The single most
effective evangelistic methodology under heaven is planting new
churches."
MULTIPLYING
CHURCHES: Reaching Today's Communities Through Church Planting,
Timmis, Stephen, Christian Focus Publications, 2000. Incisive chapters
on the theology of church planting, the principles for multiplying
effective gospel centered churches, and a fascinating look at the
history of church planting help us to see the possibilities.
INCARNATIONAL
MINISTRY: Planting Churches in Band, Tribal, Peasant, and Urban
Societies, Heibert, Paul, et al, Grand Rapids: Baker-Revell, 1995.
The authors study four types of societies of bands, tribes, peaseantry
and urbanites. The authors show that identifying distinctive styles
of social interaction can guide church planters towards openness
in a community. Charts and study data help explain class structures
and social characteristics.
PLANTING
CHURCHES IN MUSLIM CITIES, Livingstone, Greg, Grand Rapids: Baker-Revell,
1993. A blueprint for church planting in Muslim countries based
on the documented experiences of 100 missionaries who are evangelizing
and discipling in the Muslim world.
MISSIONARY
METHOD: St. Paul's Or Ours, Allen, Roland, Grand Rapids: Eeerdmans,
1999. Profoundly biblical, Allen's methods are drawn from a scrupulous
examination of St. Paul's own principles for missionary work. The
strategy of the apostolic method with its unwavering belief and
trust in the Holy Spirit indwelling converts and the churches of
which they are members, is as relevant today as it was in the first
formative years of the church.
THE
SPONTANEOUS EXPANSION OF THE CHURCH, Allen, Roland, Eugene, OR:
Wipf and Stock Publishers, 1997. Though he wrote almost a century
ago, Allen's ideas addressed problems in missionary thinking that
survive to this day. He exhorts missionaries to biblical simplicity
and sound doctrine while warning against the cultural and organizational
tendencies of mission organizations and the churches they plant.
PASSING
THE BATON, Church Planting That Empowers, Steffen, Tom A., La Habra,
CA: Center for Organizational and Ministry Development, 1997. Steffen,
a missions prof at Biola, says that since effective leaders start
with the end in mind, missionaries need to think through the phase-out
process before the church plant begins. Steffen draws on lots of
experience and bad stories to teach missionaries some valuable lessons.
BUSINESS
AS USUAL IN THE MISSIONS ENTERPRISE? Steffen, Tom A., La Habra,
CA: Center for Organizational and Ministry Development, 1999. This
book should be read by church leaders and by anyone going overseas
for more than six months. It helps reduce the amaturization of missions.
ANTHROPOLOGICAL
REFLECTION ON MISSIOLOGICAL ISSUES, Heibert, Paul, Grand Rapids,
Baker-Revell, 1994. Anthropology's contributions are explored to
give an understanding of cross-cultural epistemology, globalism,
urbanization, church planting, and spiritual warfare.
COMMUNICATING
CHRIST CROSS-CULTURALLY, Hesselgrave, David J., Grand Rapids: Zondervan
Publishing House, 1991. An introduction to missionary communication.
Examines world views, cognitive processes, linguistic forms, behavioral
patterns, social structures, communication media, and motivational
sources. Indexed.
