CAREER MISSIONS

While none of us is sufficient in ourselves to do God's work, some Christians feel particularly called by the Lord to make cross-cultural church planting their life's work and have equipped themselves for that purpose.

From examining the first missionaries who went out in Acts 13, it is evident that God's Spirit calls (puts an unrelenting burden upon) a Christian to pursue missionary service, but it is equally true from that passage that God speaks to the leaders of that Christian's local church about releasing them to do that work.

Over the past decade, the average age of those applying for career missionary service is 34 years old, and 82% of career applicants have done some sort of short-term missionary service. Getting overseas to see things for yourself is often the catalyst God uses to give a Christian a burden for a country that just won't go away.

NOT JUST BIBLE COLLEGE GRADS

BMW has changed its policy to receive applications from those who have not received formal Bible or Christian college degrees. In fact, some of BMW's finest missionaries are those who, while engaged in secular careers, were equipped for ministry over a period of years by their local church.

THE PROCESS

The steps to the mission field are as follows:

  1. Complete the Preliminary Questionnaire and send it in to the BMW home office. For your convenience, there are two ways you can do it:

Candidate Department
Biblical Ministries Worldwide
1595 Herrington Road
Lawrenceville, GA 30043

  1. BMW will then correspond with your home church to secure their recommendation for missionary service prior to continuing with the application process.
  2. Once your home church provides a positive recommendation, you will be sent a self-managed Career Application form.
  3. When your application, supporting material, and references are received, you will then be able to attend one of our orientations available in January and in July. Candidate Orientation provides you with an opportunity to learn more about BMW and to have in-depth contact with mission personnel. To learn more, go to our Candidate Orientation webpage.
  4. During Candidate Orientation, candidates meet with the Board of Directors for action on their application. Accepted candidates become "appointees."
  5. The next step in the process is for the appointees to receive an invitation from the field before they receive their field assignment. New appointees are encouraged to visit that field and get acquainted with field personnel.
  6. Appointees begin support-raising activities to secure commitments for monthly prayer and financial support in preparation for going to the mission field. Some appointees may be required to do a missionary internship to prepare them for their field assignment.
  7. Before appointees leave for the field they will need to attend a Pre-Field Orientation time held each year at the International Office in July.
  8. Appointees are expected to raise 100% of their required monthly support and outgoing funds before they are approved to depart for their field assignment. Upon completion, appointees may then begin language study or ministry in the assigned country.

Thank you for your interest and heart for missions. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Jim Brown, Director of Mobilization.
