WHAT DO YOU ENVISION WHEN YOU HEAR THE WORD: "GERMANY"?

  • Do you think of Mercedes, the World Cup, and castles on the Rhein River?
  • Are you reminded of world wars, a divided city, the Berlin Airlift, and Checkpoint Charlie?
  • Or perhaps Lederhosen (leather shorts), oompah music, and Oktoberfest with beer and bratwurst pop into mind?
  • What about envisioning you and BMW (Biblical Ministries Worldwide)!

Germany is a not only a country with an amazing history, but also a country where Biblical Ministries Worldwide has had a long and rich heritage. Church planting efforts began there under BMW's predecessor mission, Worldwide European Fellowship, in the late 1950s. Over the years, churches were planted in Augsburg, Marktoberdorf, Fussen, Shongau, Weilheim, Ulm and Berlin. BMW personnel are currently working in eastern Berlin, in Ulm (southwest Germany near Bavaria) and in northeastern Germany.

TEAM BERLIN
Church planting in eastern Berlin is being carried out by a team of personnel:

  • Dave and Linda Sweet
  • Christine Sears
  • Daniel and Debbie Willoughby
  • Briana Efta (also looking toward ministering to the Polish).

One church has been planted and turned over to national leadership (Christen in Marzahn/Hellersdorf or CMH), another has been started in Gruenheide, and two more groups are in different stages of preparing to become church plants. For more on our team, goals and objectives, please read the articles: Who Are We? and "You All Have Got the Wall."

ULM
Laverne and Marilyn Busenitz are wrapping up many years of faithful service, and will be turning the work in Ulm over to national leadership before moving back to the States this spring.

THE CHALLENGE
Even though there is much that has been done in the past, the "fields" here, more than ever, are dramatically in need of workers for the harvest.

  • There is one church started and two other home Bible studies waiting for those who will assist them and train them to do the work of the ministry.
  • There are 41,000 Polish in Berlin that need to be told of new life in Christ.
  • There are 117,000 people of Turkish descent who have an opportunity to hear of the Lord.
  • Another 20,000 Vietnamese have made Berlin their home and could be told what Christianity is all about.
  • A hearing-impaired population of approximately 5,000 need the Lord.
  • Most of the small communities surrounding Berlin, once strongly impacted by the Gospel through the Reformation, no longer have a living gospel witness today.

Yes, much has been done, but so much more still needs to be done. Among all those wonderful things that Germany is and offers, its utmost need is still the Lord Jesus Christ.

How about envisioning Germany and Biblical Ministries Worldwide and YOU?
