CROATIA Croatia
is one of the former Yugoslav republics. Bordered by Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia,
Montenegro, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and with a population of roughly 4.5 million,
Croatia is still recovering from the wars and strife of the past two decades.
VISION
AND MINISTRY PLAN We
aim to: - Advance
the cause of the Gospel in Croatia through relationship evangelism and organized
evangelistic outreaches
- Promote
spiritual growth and leadership in new believers through discipleship
- Assist
Croatian nationals to start new churches by discipling new believers and encouraging
them to share the Gospel with their fellow countrymen
We
are privileged to partner with Pastor Vladimir, a Croatian church planter. Pastor
Vladimir has planted two churches in central Croatia and has a vision to plant
several more along the Croatia-Bosnia border. Because Bosnia (a Muslim country)
is closed to western missionaries, we desire to help plant these churches in Croatia,
disciple the believers in them, and then send those believers over the border
to begin churches in Bosnia, where we currently cannot go.
The
primary evangelistic outreach in the region where we serve is Teaching English
as a Foreign Language (TEFL). Two-week classes held several times throughout the
year give us the opportunity to introduce the Gospel to students of all ages while
also giving them instruction in the English language (a desired skill in Croatia).
Baseball camps, personal evangelism, and one-on-one discipleship help to build,
strengthen, and edify the Church in this predominantly Catholic country. BMW
MINISTRY HISTORY IN CROATIA
Rich
and Paula Barnds began their ministry in Croatia in 1992. In that year Rich helped
establish the Eastern European Bible Institute in the Croatian city of Cakovec.
In 1993 the Barnds helped with the evangelistic campaign "Ima Nade"
(There is Hope), and in the summer of 1994, Paula participated in a pilot program
for TEFL. Paula was so excited about the possibilities of using TEFL as an evangelistic
tool that she convinced Rich that they should be involved in future uses of TEFL
in Croatia. Subsequent trips to Sisak, Croatia, led to the plan for a TEFL outreach
program in that city. The program began in the summer of 1995. Rich
and Paula recruited a team from the United States to join and assist them in Croatia
with the planned TEFL program. Though Croatia was still in a state of war, God
blessed the work of that team and used them to draw 20 individuals to Himself.
The church planting and evangelism ministry that began then is still going strong
today. God used Rich and Paula to help rebuild and reopen the Baptist church
in the city of Petrinja after the war ended in Croatia in 1995. In 2001, God led
them to help build and start a new church in Brzaj, a suburb of Sisak, and also
to assist in the start of a new Baptist church in the village of Donji Zirovac. HOW
YOU CAN HELP
In
2005, God called Rich and Paula to a new ministry in England. BMW missionaries
Matt and Ellen Bjerk plan to continue the evangelism and discipling ministries
already established in Croatia. They are looking to recruit short-term ministry
teams from the US to assist with TEFL and baseball camps. If you have a good grasp
of the English language and can help with training Croatians and Serbs for a couple
of weeks in the summer, please let us know. The Bjerks are also praying for long-term
team members to assist them and Pastor Vladimir with church planting in villages
along the Croatia-Bosnia border. If
you would like more information on this exciting ministry, please see www.bjerkmissions.com
or contact Matt Bjerk or Paul
Seger, BMW's Area Director for Europe. |
