HISTORY
OF OUR MINISTRY BMW
opened the field of Argentina in February 1979 when Miguel and Myriam Garroni
and their family arrived in the city of Corrientes, in the northeastern part of
the country, to start a church-planting ministry in their home. Through the years
a church developed through door-to-door visitation, tract distribution and personal
Bible classes. Meetings were held first in their home, and later in the new church
building in downtown Corrientes. In
1982, Ernesto and Marlene Forteza and Mary Kruse joined the Garronis in the ministry.
That same year, the church bought a property with a small house which was used
as the temporary location for the church. The present building was started in
1985, and the auditorium was dedicated on March 6, 1988. The
Fortezas then moved to Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, in 1986 and located
in Ramos Mejía, a densely populated bedroom community, to open a new work.
In April 1993 the Lord provided a building for the church which houses an apartment,
an auditorium, classrooms, guest accommodations, and room for expansion. Though
this ministry has struggled, the Fortezas continue there and have also become
involved with a baptist seminary in another suburb of Buenos Aires.
In
1986, Bob and Karen Depue arrived in Argentina and joined the team in Corrientes.
Their goal was to open a new work in the city of Resistencia, across the Rio Paraná
Province of Chaco. The church has developed slowly but steadily. The Depues were
assisted for several years by the Don Clipperton family, and now there are some
strong national leaders being developed to assume regular ministry roles in the
church. The church has a very nice facility that includes a spacious meeting area,
a large indoor space for sports and other activities, a pastor's residence and
a small guest cottage.
In
1990, Dr. Luis Ramirez and his wife Adriana, believers from Corrientes Bible Church,
graduated from the Bible Institute and joined the BMW team in Corrientes. Together
with Mary Kruse, they started a new work in the Laguna Seca neighborhood. The
Ramirezes also developed a Christian school in the downtown church. Ed Fitzgerald,
who is now in Honduras, joined the Corrientes team in 1999 and served there for
five years. Mary Kruse retired in 2005.
In
March 2001 Miguel and Myriam Garroni left the field of Argentina to go to Montevideo,
Uruguay. Though officially retired, they are still active in evangelism and have
started a new house church in their home. The church in Corrientes continues under
national leadership.
Shortly
after the Garronis moved to Uruguay, the Ramirez family relocated to Carlos Paz,
a resort town located just half an hour from Córdoba, Argentina's second
largest city. They have begun a church in their home there, using various means-English
classes, folkloric societies, and involvement with the parents at their children's
schools-to establish relationships with the local people. Their original strategy
was to plant churches in the twelve towns encircling Lago San Roque, the large
lake that constitutes one of the main attractions of the area. However, when new
team members Ivan and Kimberly Hoyt arrive in 2008, the ministry will possibly
change direction to concentrate on the string of cities in the Punilla Valley.
Daniel
and Nelly De la Fuente arrived in downtown Buenos Aires in 2003, and eventually
settled in Saavedra, a neighborhood very near the heart of the city. They have
rented and renovated a store front on a main street and are working to establish
a church in that community. Much of their evangelism is done outdoors, as apartment
buildings are inaccessible and people can be contacted more easily in the city
parks.
In
2006, Joe and Gail Owens came to BMW from another agency. They had already begun
to work with a national pastor in Don Torcuato, one of Buenos Aires' many bedroom
cities, and are seeking to further equip the Argentine believers for ministry
there. They have sought to nurture a ministry partnership with nationals in which
Argentine Christians will work alongside them in both the establishment and implementation
of their future ministry plans.
