nyc-disaster.jpgHURRICANE SANDY RELIEF REPORT
November 2012
By David & Karen Tinsley, BMW Missionaries in New York City

“Here in New York City, we are faced with widespread destruction. The roads look like dirt roads. Piles of debris that were once somebody’s possessions line the roads. Boats are in the median. Huge piles of wood are what is left of the Boardwalk. Cars are piled on top of each other. The water line is halfway up the elevators.

More importantly, people are isolated choosing to stay home to make sure that what they still have is not stolen. Hot meals are in great demand along with warm blankets and coats. The destruction is overwhelming and the needs are great. The clean-up will take time and the needs will change. While we want to meet physical needs, it is an opportune time to reach the spiritual needs of people.

There are two ways in which you can be involved:

  1. First, please pray for wisdom, guidance, and discernment as we seek to meet people’s physical and spiritual needs and use God’s resources wisely.
  2. Secondly, if you have a desire to give, we ask that you give financial gifts rather than actual items since the needs change from week to week. Any financial gift can be given through the PayPal account on our church’s website: allnationsbaptist.org.

Thank you for standing with us as we serve the King of kings in the heart of Queens.”

NEW YORK CITY: "A Home to Many Immigrants"

NYCpeople.jpgAlthough New York City is in the United States of America, it is truly a city that welcomes the world to our very doorstep. New York City is made up of five boroughs or counties.

  1. Manhattan is known for its financial center, clothing, theater districts and exquisite and unique restaurants.
  2. The Bronx is known for the "Bronx Bombers" - the World Champion Yankees.
  3. Queens has the most diversified population with over 150 languages "where the west meets the world."
  4. Brooklyn has a large Jewish population, is well known for the Brooklyn Bridge, of course the Brooklyn Dodgers got their start there and all Brooklynites are known the world over for their strong attitude"fuhgettaboudit!".
  5. Staten Island is the least populated borough, known for the Staten Island ferry, and the resting place of the World Trade Center, it is connected to Queens by the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.

THE MINISTRY IN NYC

Our heartbeat is to reach out to every people group (where they are) with the Gospel of Christ. God's Word says to go and preach the Gospel (Mark 16:15). This is done through open-air evangelism. By using a sketch board and other Gospel illustrations, the Gospel is presented to every age group. Many people would never set foot inside a church building, but they will stop on the sidewalk to see and listen to a Gospel presentation. When they stop, they hear the Gospel; our goal is to present a clear, uncompromising message from God's Word. His Word will not return void. When we work using trained church teams in the open air, there are 4 things that are accomplished.

  1. Sometimes we are digging the ground up in peoples' lives.
  2. Other times we are planting the Gospel seed for the first time.
  3. Sometimes we are watering the seeds that others have planted.
  4. Other times we are reaping the harvest in someone's life.

Failing is an impossible task as we live out our love and obedience to the Lord. What a joy it is to see people saved and then grow in a local church!

Not only are we seeing God's Word proclaimed, we are seeing the body of Christ being obedient as they spread the Gospel. Church groups from all over the U.S. are trained to work as a unified team to reach this needy city with the Gospel of Christ. We are privileged to have a part in training and preparing them to take steps of obedience as they share Christ with others.

THE NEEDS ARE GREAT

For every reason that you can think of to avoid the city, these are the very reasons you are needed here. You might say...

NYC talk.jpgWe can minister 365 days a year. There are 4 major types of ministry.

  1. We present the Gospel to adults using the sketch board above ground.
  2. We hold children's meetings in parks or housing projects.
  3. We have a board with 3 doors. It has a sign that says, "See 3 Things That God Cannot Do!" It gets people to stop so that we can engage them in conversation and share the Gospel with them.
  4. If the weather is inclement, we can minister in the subway system under ground using a rope illustration to present the Gospel. There are 5 million+ who ride the subway every business day.

We can use short-term missionaries who might want to learn a new language and immerse themselves in a foreign culture without ever leaving the shores of the United States. You choose a country and it probably can be found in NYC. Have you considered being a tent-maker? You can work full- or part-time and still minister with us. You do not have to be an artist to use the sketch board. Do you have a heart to share the Gospel and make disciples? We need those who have a pastor's heart to plant a church and help to disciple new believers. Maybe you are skilled in organization and office work, we can use you.

FUTURE MINISTRY

The population in the NYC megalopolis is so very dense. There are multiplied people groups creating diversity around every corner! We desire to see a full-time team join with us to reach this city. There is a need for biblically-based churches to be planted in every borough. In NYC, where cults and the world's religions are strong, and the Adversary is seeking whom He may devour, Christians must reach these hungry souls, or these souls will perish in darkness. Come and help us!
