Riots, burning cars, and striking students have gained much of the media attention that France has received over the past year. However, these headlines certainly do not do justice to the complexity of the situation. The country of France and those living within her borders are experiencing some drastic changes due to an aging population, massive immigration and globalization.

The social instability underscores the spiritual need among the 60.8 million inhabitants. Here is a brief overview of the major religious affiliations in France:

Roman Catholic
67%
Non-religious
20%
Muslim
10%
Diverse Christian groups
3%
Jewish
1%
Buddhist
1%
Evangelical

A small minority still attend Catholic Mass on Sunday while there is a growing presence of Islam through immigration and conversion. The school system and society in general have rejected God and would consider a believer of the Bible to be "anti-intellectual" and "child-like." In some cases the national Evangelical church is trying to do their part in making a difference, but readily admit their need for help, particularly when it comes to reaching the minority segments of the population.

For the past seven years, BMW missionaries have been on the fields of France, with the goal of starting churches among these minority segments of the population in the cities of Metz and Toulouse. Working with people from different religious, linguistic and cultural backgrounds requires sensitivity to a diverse set of ethnic, educational and philosophical mindsets as they share the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
