ANSWERS TO PRAYER
George Mueller

Illustrates the effectiveness of prayer.  From this book we may see that a man of prayer, just telling what God can do, will do more to increase one’s prayer life than books, sermons, or seminars on prayer.  Mueller’s life work was to have God glorified, by living a life of total dependence on Him.  His chief rule was never to tell people the needs, but only to ask God for help.  This book is sort of a journal that describes the wonderful ways God did indeed meet basic needs of over forty years.

A CALL TO SPIRITUAL REFORMATION
D.A. Carson

Carson carefully works through all of Paul’s prayers, presenting careful exegesis as he works through the passages, explaining the meaning.  He shows Paul’s priorities in prayer and catches his focus on trusting God intimately.  In each prayer he presents background theology on surrounding issues and shows how this relates to our lives today.  Carson also provides precise advice on how we should be praying and managing a daily prayer time.  This is a strong expositional study.

THE COMPLETE WORKS OF E.M. BOUNDS ON PRAYER
E.M. Bounds

This volume combines all eight of Bounds’ major books.  Bounds has probably influenced more people to pray than any other 20th century author.  The books motivate the reader to pray more and cover most aspects of prayer.  This great pastoral leader taught the essentials, necessity, possibilities, power, purpose, and weapon of prayer.  The books call the believer to stretch and reach further in prayer, putting faith into practice.  His emphasis is on practice and dependence on Christ.

HOW I KNOW GOD ANSWERS PRAYER
Rosalind Goforth

Rosalind Goforth was a missionary in China at the turn of the last century.  This book, mostly covering the Goforths’ work over their 20 years in China, relates how she learned to pray for daily needs and see God answer.    It’s a small book, but very encouraging to those who wonder if God really does answer prayers for the “small stuff”.  It is a personal testimony of His answers to prayer for the Goforth family.  It shows God’s delight to answer your prayers.  Woven into the interesting stories are principles of prayer with biblical references.

PRAYER THAT WORKS
Jill Briscoe

The author takes her reader through the stories of Elijah and Elisha in I & II Kings, looking at the prayer lives and influence of these two characters.  At the end of each chapter there are questions for individual thought or group discussion which provides excellent material for small groups.  Readers will be challenged to pray bold prayers rather than settle for the meek prayers not offered in deep faith.  You will learn to repair altars, surrender to God’s timing, and plan and persist when prayers seem to go unanswered.

A PRAYING LIFE
Paul Miller

Miller refuses to separate spiritual life from the rest of daily life.  As constant communication is so essential in everyday experiences, he encourages integrating prayer into our daily routine.  He talks about a heart that becomes a factory of prayer; i.e. a passion to speak to God honestly and in a way that will change our lives and others for whom we pray.  He helps us understand why prayer malfunctions in our lives, and how suffering is often the context where we learn to pray.

TALKING TO GOD: What the Bible Teaches About Prayer
Thomas Constable

This is a biblical theology of prayer; it tells the why, what, and Who of prayer as well as tackling difficult questions and practical aspects of prayer.  The author describes the forms of communication God invites, unmasks “counterfeits” that pass for prayer, and addresses such difficulties as unanswered prayer.  Brief but powerful, it illustrates from common life how to worship God amid our daily walk, and how to pray without ceasing.  A great help in becoming aware of God’s presence when we go through life’s daily routines.

TEACH THEM TO PRAY: Cultivating God-Dependency in Your Church
Paul Tautges

We promote our programs while at the same time we marginalize corporate prayer.  Tautges encourages us to pray biblical, God-centered prayers in our corporate praying, not just for health or financial needs.  Although directed to pastors, this book gives encouragement and instruction concerning corporate prayer that will be valuable to all members of a congregation.  It is theologically rich, yet practical instruction, valuable to our theology and practice of prayer.

TOUCH THE WORLD THROUGH PRAYER
Wesley Duewel

The author was a missionary to India for 25 years and a former president of OMS International.  A theme of the book is that God plans for ordinary Christians to become mighty in prayer and the reaping of Christ’s harvest among the nations today.  Duewel gives specific Bible promises for these intercessory prayers and principles to be an effective prayer warrior.  He provides step-by-step plans for making a prayer list, organizing a prayer circle, and holding a prayer retreat for those with a burden for missions.

THE VALLEY OF VISION
Arthur Bennett, editor

A selection of prayers and meditations in the Puritan tradition, widely valued since its publication in 1975. The prayers are about one page long each, and grouped into sections.  The book is not necessarily one to be read from front to back; you can open it up and read any prayer and it can quickly become your own.  The prayers are theologically correct and deep and often eloquent.  It is still important not to become infatuated by them, using it as a sort of prayer book, but to pray from the heart.
